Relaxing during clinical hypnotherapy session in Victoria Park

What to Expect at Your First Hypnotherapy Session in Perth

Booking your first hypnotherapy session can feel like a step into the unknown. You might wonder what the room looks like, what you’ll be asked, or whether you’ll be “under” the moment you sit down. (You won’t be.)

The good news is that a first session is calm, structured and far more ordinary than most people imagine. Here’s exactly what happens when you visit Freedom House in Victoria Park, from booking to walking out the door.

Before You Arrive

Booking

You can book online at any time through the [booking page]. Alternatively, get in touch if you’d like to ask a few questions first. There’s no pressure either way.

How to prepare

Very little preparation is needed. Wear comfortable clothing and try to arrive reasonably well rested. The Mayo Clinic gives the same advice, since being rested makes you less likely to doze off in a relaxing session.

It also helps to think briefly about what you’d like to change. You don’t need a polished answer. A rough sense of “I want to feel calmer at work” or “I’m ready to stop smoking” is plenty.

Finding us

Freedom House is in Victoria Park, a short drive from the Perth CBD at 3b King George Street. There is a council car park nearby. You’ll also receive directions when you book, so you know exactly where to go.

The First Few Minutes

When you arrive, you’ll be welcomed into a quiet, private room with a comfortable couch and a recliner. We just start with a friendly conversation.

It’s normal to feel a little nervous at their first hypnotherapy session. That’s completely normal, and it usually passes quickly once we start talking.

The Conversation

The first part of the session is a relaxed chat. I’ll ask about:

  • what brings you in, and what you’d like to be different
  • what you’ve already tried
  • your general health, sleep and stress levels
  • what you enjoy, and places where you feel calm

That last question matters more than it seems. Your answers help me shape imagery that’s personal to you, such as a favourite beach or a walk you love. Personal imagery tends to work far better than a generic script.

I’ll also explain how hypnosis works and answer any questions. Many clients ask whether they’ll lose control or reveal secrets. They won’t. You stay aware throughout, and you can open your eyes at any time.

The Hypnosis Itself

Once you’re comfortable, you’ll settle back into the recliner. The hypnosis then unfolds in four stages.

  1. Induction. I guide you to slow your breathing and relax your body, step by step.
  2. Deepening. Calm imagery helps you relax further, while your mind stays focused on my voice.
  3. Therapeutic work. I offer suggestions tailored to your goals, drawing on what we discussed earlier.
  4. Returning. I count you back up gently, and you open your eyes feeling clear and refreshed.

Most people describe the experience as deeply relaxing, a little like the moment just before sleep. However, you’ll still hear everything. If you’re curious about the details, I will follow up this post with an separate article on what hypnosis actually feels like.

After the Session

Once you’re back, we take a few minutes to talk about how it felt. Some people feel light and calm straight away. Others feel quietly reflective. Both responses are normal.

I’ll often teach you a short self-hypnosis or breathing technique to use at home. Practising it between sessions helps the work settle in, and it makes each later session more effective.

Finally, we’ll discuss next steps. Some goals, like quitting smoking, can make strong progress in a small number of sessions. Others, such as long-standing anxiety, usually benefit from a few sessions spaced over several weeks. I’ll give you an honest recommendation, and the decision is always yours.

How Long Does a First Hypnotherapy Session Take?

Allow about 90 minutes for your first hypnotherapy session. It runs longer than later sessions because of the opening conversation. Follow-up sessions are usually shorter (about an hour) and spend more of the time in hypnosis.

A Few Practical Tips

  • Arrive a few minutes early so you don’t feel rushed.
  • Switch your phone to aeroplane mode or turn it off.
  • Skip heavy meals or alcohol beforehand, as both make it harder to stay focused.
  • Bring your questions. No question is too basic.

Ready to Book Your First Hypnotherapy Session?

Your first hypnotherapy session is simply a calm conversation followed by a guided period of deep relaxation, focused entirely on what you want to change. There’s nothing to fear, and nothing you need to get right.
